Aiden had never interacted with cats or dogs before, so upon seeing this scene, he instinctively smiled.
He was not one to smile often. Therefore, when Mia noticed he was smiling, she became even more determined to cheer up Aiden by playing with Herbert and putting on a show for him.
Sam and Tina, standing nearby, couldn't stop smiling throughout the entire time.
As lunchtime approached, the elderly couple politely declined Byron's invitation to have lunch together. They then held Herbert's leash and slowly walked back home.
While with Mia, Herbert was excited and full of energy. But now, as he walked with Sam and Tina, he seemed to slow down and become more cautious, as if afraid of accidentally tripping and hurting them.
As Sam observed the scene, he inexplicably felt a slight pang of emotion in his heart.
"Darling, how about we give Herbert to Mia?" Sam suddenly suggested. "Lisa is always complaining about him shedding fur and drooling everywhere. She even hit him last night. Luckily, Mia and her dad saw it happen last night, but who knows how often she's done it when we weren't around."
"I understand all that, but... Herbert is the only memory we have of Harry," Tina said, wiping her tears.
Herbert, who was walking ahead, must have heard Tina's cries.
He immediately stopped, looked back with concern, and made worried grunting sounds while circling Tina, trying to comfort her.
"Don't worry, Herbert. I'm fine." Tina choked out, trying to comfort him.
The discussion about whether to give away the dog ended abruptly without reaching any conclusion.
As the elderly couple arrived home, they were greeted by Lisa, dressed in a professional and formal work outfit. She looked at her grandparents with a hint of disapproval and asked, "Why are you both going out to walk the dog mid-day? Are you two out of your minds? It is so hot out there."
Sam looked at her, his face darkening with anger.
He then held onto Herbert's leash and silently walked toward the backyard.
"Why are you so angry this early in the morning? Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed?" Lisa had no issue being impolite to her elders, but if Sam had a stern expression, she wouldn't stand for it. She immediately began complaining.
"That's enough!" Tina spoke in a hushed tone. "Lisa, answer me. Did you hit Herbert?"
Lisa was taken aback for a second, then laughed in exasperation. "Is Grandpa giving me the silent treatment just because I hit the dog?"
"That's your little brother's dog!" Tina said sternly. "Herbert is a very well-behaved dog. You shouldn't have hit him. From now on, you don't need to walk him anymore. When we're busy, the housekeeper will take him for walks!"
