I didn't say anything, which meant that he was right.
After a pause, Irvin opened his mouth and said, "I don't mean anything else. I just wanted to see you and know how you have been."
I paused for a while and said, "I'm fine, so thank you for your concern!"
Our eyes met, and his smile seemed a little lonely. He replied, "I will wait. A lifetime is long enough, and I will always wait for you. It's okay if I can't have you. A lifetime is short, and it will soon pass. In the next life, I will meet you first!"
A black Maybach stopped behind him, and the man in the back seat lowered the window and looked in our direction.
I noticed him, but I said nothing. I simply looked at Irvin and said, "Mr. Granger, thank you for your favor. However, my words still stand. You don't have to waste your time on me. I have my own family, my business and my children, and I'm doing fine, and you know very well how your presence here will affect me. Therefore, I don't want you to appear in my life anymore. I don't want to be favored by any man other than Hendrix, even if you only want to protect me."
Irvin lowered his head and said with a wry smile, "You rejected other men for him. If you love him that wholeheartedly, why would you leave Jarold City to come here? Arianna, I'm just really curious. What exactly are you thinking about?"
How should I put my thoughts into words?
After thinking about it, I said, "I left Jarold City only because of a past grudge between him and I. It wasn't because I didn't love him, nor was it because I fell in love with someone else. It was because I needed some time to persuade myself that I'm worthy of him, of a great man and his love, and that I deserve to grow old with him. In fact, it's not because I don't love him, but instead because I love him too much that I felt inferior to him. That's why I thought that such a good man like him should be with a better woman!"
Irvin lowered his head and smiled bitterly. He pursed his lips slightly, and a sorrowful look flashed across his eyes, "Anyways, I said that I would wait. I hope that in the next life, the person you meet first is me, and not Hendrix. Whatever he can give you, I can give you double of that."
I couldn't help but sigh slightly. I knew deep inside that he wouldn't easily compromise.
I did not want to argue with him about the matter, so I looked at him and said, "Irvin, the worst thing right now is that you're thinking that the grass is greener on the other side. In fact, what you have in your hands right now is precious. I hope you can understand that so you wouldn't miss your opportunity to obtain true happiness."
After a pause, I continued, "Since you've been searching for me, you must have already known that Hendrix and I are on good terms now. You said that you wanted to see me. Now that you've already met me, and I've also seen you, you should know that I'm doing fine. If there's nothing else, you should return to Jarold City."
In order to make Irvin give up, I said again, "Hendrix and I will reconcile, and we will be on better terms than before. You didn't manage to wait for me back then, so it will be even more impossible for you to be with me in the future. So, please don't waste your time on me."
Before he could say anything else, I lifted my left hand, revealing the ring on my ring finger.
Hendrix had put the diamond ring on me the previous night to signify us being a couple. The diamond was not too big, but it was still quite dazzling.
