After that shocking speech, he still remembered to put some shrimp into my gaping mouth.
Awkwardness returned to the dinner table while the waitstaff unobtrusively served our meal. Sebastian probably out of guilt gave us all a treat. Then again, he was the host of this dinner. After all, the Milton Group was the party in charge of the project.
Throughout dinner, I was most uncomfortable. Irvin kept sending over dishes from his side of the table while Hendrix kept stuffing food into my mouth. He was probably hoping that I would not have the spare time to eat the food given by anyone other than him.
While I stuffed my face, I had to endure Andrea's ice-cold gaze, as well as Rowane's look of disdain.
Finally, the meal was over. Irvin looked at me and said, "Arianna, where are you staying? You ate too much today. Why don't we go out for a walk to digest the food?"
I pressed my lips together and shook my head. "No, I..."
"As husband and wife, we have other things to deal with tonight. Thank you, Mr. Granger, for your kindness." Hendrix answered for us then took my hand and dragged me away.
Although Irvin was displeased, he did not say anything further.
We left the restaurant. I'd really eaten a lot, and I was thinking about where to go for a walk.
But I had to go to the bathroom first.
I asked Hendrix to wait for me in the hall, and I went straight to the bathroom. When I came out, I happened to meet Rowane.
She was washing her hands in the sink. When she saw me come out of the bathroom, she wiped her hands with tissue paper and looked at me in disdain. "Arianna, I know you're good at juggling men, but Lancille Village is my life's work. Don't mess it up for me. I'll never be done with you if you do!"
I looked at her and said, "Don't worry. You are not the only one who cares about this project. I care too."
She sneered, "Your care is irrelevant. I admit that I underestimated you. I thought it was a coincidence that you hooked up with Hendrix. Now it seems that although you look ordinary, you have good tactics. No wonder Miss Burton lost to you."
I wiped my hands and looked at her. "Miss Zanes, I appreciate your seriousness and professionalism for work, but please apply your intelligence to your private life. I'm indeed not as good as you, but it doesn't mean that I'm useless. You can say Hendrix marrying me is my luck, but he's been married to me for ten years. How good can a person's luck be for so long? Don't be so narrow-minded."
After a slight pause, I continued, "Also, I hope that you can think about what you're assuming about me. I know Irvin, but it doesn't mean that he likes me, or that I seduced him by some other means. Have you ever thought about why these two outstanding men fell in love with me? You're excellent and yet they just admire your work abilities and have never thought of having a relationship with you outside of work. People don't only have jobs. A man loves a woman not only because of her appearance and abilities but also because of her warmth and affection. That is what we call fate."
