I blinked in surprise. I was a little confused and said after a pause, "You..."
He smiled faintly and looked a little lonely. "So, can you promise me that you won't treat me indifferently? Arianna, you know that there aren't many people I want to protect in this world. No matter how bad I am, I'm sincere towards you. Even though I don't have the right, can you treat me like a brother? Don't treat me like a stranger and ignore my existence."
I did not know why, but my heart ached when I heard what he said. I paused for a moment and nodded. Then, I looked at him and said, "Irvin, I'm sorry. I owe you my life. You know that's all I can promise you. I can't be with you. It's my blessing to have Hendrix around to protect me. Thank you for your efforts, but I don't deserve it. You have someone who needs your care. Shirley is probably giving birth soon. She's a good woman. Since you married her, you should be responsible to her and your children for the rest of your life."
He nodded in resignation, a bitter smile on his face. "I know, I have lost what I wanted the most. It's better to make others happy. Maybe this is the best result."
People should not live too obsessively. Otherwise, they would end up hurting themselves.
After our chat, we head back to the base. He asked again, "Since we have aired out our issues, can I invite you to dinner tonight? Don't think too much about it. It's just that I'm new here and I'm not yet familiar with this place. I'd like to have dinner with someone I know. It's better than having dinner alone."
When I saw the innocent and expectant look in his eyes, I couldn't help but feel pity for him. "Okay!"
I agreed in confusion. When I saw him enter the base with a smile, I realized that Hendrix was likely to return to Lancille Village tonight too.
But there was no reason to withdraw my agreement, right? I sighed helplessly.
Thankfully the rest of the afternoon's work went fine.
