However, there was no point in fretting with Hendrix. Trying my best to suppress my emotions, I looked at him and asked instead, "By the way, what happened today? Aren't Austin and Andrea on good terms? Why did he change his attitude so suddenly? What went wrong?"
He hugged me tightly and said, "He's probably in a hurry. Andrea doesn't want to marry him, yet she has been relying on him. Needless to say, men and women are the same. Up to a certain age, there will always be some worries. The Shelley family has been pressuring him to get married. After so many years, he's anxious. He's a very traditional person by nature and he agrees with the elders. He thinks that marriage is what he needs right now!
"He's getting old. Andrea is not willing to marry him. She's been wasting his time and he had been lost for so long. He's also very anxious. I told him just now that you are pregnant, which means that we are going to start our own family soon."
Hearing this, I realized that Hendrix seemed to be very different from before. In the past, he was ambitious and would constantly try to get to higher ground. He was like an emperor who wanted to expand his territory, but now it was different. He had decided to focus on our family, our home.
Seeing that I was staring blankly at him, he raised his hand and touched his nose, "Why are you looking at me like this?"
I smiled faintly and said, "I was just thinking to myself that I must be a good mother in the future. No more fooling around."
He smiled slightly and said, "What, that's it?"
"And a good wife, of course!" I leaned into his arms and said, "Once Anne is cured and our child is born, everything will be fine."
Yes, it seemed that there was nothing we could do except waiting.
Thinking of what happened to Austin, I couldn't help saying, "He drove Andrea away. Does he intend to find a notable young lady in the city to settle down with?"
Hendrix was silent for a moment. Then, he looked at me seriously and said, "Sometimes a man can't get both love and marriage."
I was stunned for a few seconds before I finally understood. No matter how much Austin liked Andrea, she couldn't marry into the Shelley family because of her family background. It was undeniable that being suitable for each other is a key factor in having a successful marriage.
Andrea was not useful to Austin at all. The Shelley family couldn't accept it and neither could the ambitious Austin. Andrea was like a kid's toy. Once the child grew up, the toy would be abandoned. No matter how good the toy was, it would still be put away in the attic.
I looked at Hendrix and said nothing. I just stared at him.
Having noticed my gaze, he asked nervously, "What's wrong?"
I pursed my lips and questioned, "What kind of feelings do you have for me?" I always believed that there was more to a relationship than love and lust. I never wanted to have a relationship with someone that only relied on so- called feelings. There always had to be something more.
