When my eyes met Aaron's, he gave me a strange look, and I rolled my eyes at him in return.
Anne had been spoiled by Uncle Trent and the family when she was staying in Ucrebury. She couldn't stay still at all. After getting her pocket money, she asked Charles to go out for a snowball fight. That burly couldn't say no to her at all. So, he relented and brought Anne out into the courtyard to play in the snow together.
We sat in a circle around the sofa in the living room, looking out the huge windows. We watched Charles and Anne having fun together in the snow. In that instant, Charles looked like a child again. They were both laughing happily.
After a while, it was quiet in the living room until Aaron suddenly blurted out some news.
"Have you heard? Sebastian has been discharged," he said.
Upon hearing this news, my good mood instantly dissipated. I felt surprised and confused at the same time.
When Hendrix's lawyer was analyzing the case, I could recall clearly that he mentioned that Sebastian was suspected of intentional injury, unlawful possession of firearms, and hurting first-class protected animals. He would be sentenced for several crimes, which would put him away for at least 15 years. How did he manage to get out of jail unscathed?
Thinking of what had happened in the villa, I suddenly felt a chill go down my spine, and my breathing quickened.
Hendrix reached out and patted my hand gently to comfort me. I raised my head to look at him. I could feel a hint of calmness from his gaze. After that, I took a deep breath and tried to stay calm. I even forced a smile to make him feel assured.
Seeing that there were no responses from us, Aaron continued to analyze the case with a serious look. He explained, "He was kidnapped on the way to the hospital. I heard that someone from Viannland was the mastermind. Millions of dollars were given in exchange for Sebastian's freedom. Master Milton was a bold man. Previously, there was no leakage of news at all. After they discovered what had happened, the police went to the Milton Family estate to arrest the criminals. Only then did they realize that the Milton Family had already fled abroad with the money."
"So, Sebastian will never come back?" I asked.
I seemed to be too nervous at that moment. As soon as I finished my words, I felt Hendrix's grip on my hand become tighter. I quickly adjusted my expression and tried to make myself look more relaxed. Then, I explained vaguely, "I'm just a little curious. Can't the law punish him?"
"Arianna, you're too naive," Aaron said. He raised his hand and said jokingly, "In the end, the law is just a game with winners and losers. Although it seems that we have won and controlled the initiative, those rules in prison are not as simple as you'd expect. It has a separate set of rules for the survival of other criminals. The underlying dead-end of the law is where their second life begins."
Upon listening to his analysis, I understood the truth. There were only a handful of things in this world that could not be settled using money and power. Sebastian had already figured out how to deny his involvement before I exposed his crimes. It was safe to say that he had also planned what to do if he got put behind bars one day. Hence, he had prepared well in advance.
We could not fathom how terrifying an evil person could be. I already had a taste of this when I met Josiah, but Sebastian was on a whole new level.
It was easy to understand everything, but it didn't stop the unease and fear in my heart from spreading and growing like vines, infecting every cell in my body.
Hendrix suddenly grasped my entire hand in his. I could feel the roughness of his skin and the warmth of his head spreading through my palm. I couldn't help but frown as I glanced at him.
"I'm here," Hendrix said as he curled his lips into a smile.
