After the two of them finished talking, Bruce walked out with his pipe in his mouth.
As soon as he left, there was only Zoel and I in the office.
"This table is yours from now on," he said, pointing to the empty table next to him.
I looked at the table and then looked at him, feeling a little strange.
Two of us, face to face?
"I think I shouldn't, Mr. Parker." I tried to be natural and graceful. "I am a newcomer, and yet I am enjoying so many privileges. My colleagues might gossip about me."
Zoel stared at me for two seconds as if he was thinking. After a while, he said again, "So do you think you are as ordinary as those people outside? Why did I make all those concessions to recruit you, then?"
This made my face hot, and my throat felt stuck, and I couldn't say a word.
Zoel did not pay attention to my embarrassment. He turned and took a document from the table and handed it over. "This is the divorce case file of
Jackson Gilbert, a wealthy man in the city. Get familiar with the information as soon as possible. We will accompany Mr. Skinner to court in the next two days."
"Jackson Gilbert? Didn't the media say that he has always been single? When did he get married?" I opened the folder and took a look at it. "There are actually three children, and there was an affair?!"
I shouldn't have unleashed the gossip in me. After I said that, I could feel Zoel look at me strangely. At that moment, I wished to find a hole to hide in. However, all I could do was to quietly accept the documents and go back to my seat to read them.
Finally, it was time to get off work. When I was about to leave early to see my children, Zoel came in with a pile of documents and bumped into me.
