"Tell me what you want." I didn't want to waste any more time, so I got straight to the point.
Josiah then shifted his gaze away and fixed his eyes on me. After pondering for a while, he began to speak slowly, "Arianna, you and I have never been enemies. You shouldn't be so hostile towards me. All I want is to watch over Anne while she grows up and make up for the harm I've caused in the past."
"No. From the moment you used Anne in your revenge plan, we were destined to be irreconcilable." I retorted immediately, "You're mad. You played tricks on so many innocent victims over a dead man, and their lives are ruined forever. Why do you think you could ever make up for it?"
Josiah took a deep breath as his face turned solemn, "What I owe those people has been paid for in prison. Isn't that enough? The Saunders family are doing their best to compensate for what I've done. I made a mistake, but you're going to convict me with the 'death penalty'?"
"What nonsense are you spewing?" Aaron couldn't stand it anymore, and his eyes widened with anger, "The death penalty is what you deserve! You were in jail with food and drink, but Anne went through such a horrible disaster that she almost lost her life. Even then, she will have to be on medication for the rest of her life. Can you make up forthat?!"
What Aaron said was exactly what I had in mind. Whether it was physical or psychological, all Anne would get from Josiah was more suffering.
Upon hearing that, Josiah stared at Aaron for a while before a hint of embarrassment flashed in his eyes, "I didn't know that Anne was my child, so I was mortified as well. I want an opportunity, that's all. I guarantee you that I'll never reveal my true identity to her, let alone have her recall the past."
He paused, crossed his fingers, and lowered his head deep in thought, "Recently, I've been studying psychology and have gained quite a bit of experience. I've gradually gained Anne's trust. No one is more suited to be her personal doctor than me. I'm confident that I can return her to the previous carefree child she was before, as long as you give me some time..."
I didn't give him the chance to finish, "There's no need for that."
"Let me ask you if Anne wasn't your child, would you still do this for her?"
I remembered very clearly that when he had polluted the chemical plant, several children of the nearby residents had been affected. If Josiah sincerely regretted his actions, Anne was only the start of all the people he had to make amends to.
Josiah hadn't expected me to ask him this. He was stunned, and it took him a long time to compose himself, "There is no 'if'. Anne is mine and Monique's. She's my own flesh and blood. I won't abandon her. I know that you're going to transfer her to another school. If you insist on doing this to prevent me from seeing her, I'll file a lawsuit against you and reveal the paternity test results in court."
He finally showed his trump card.
As expected, he'd pretended to be polite and courteous before showing his fangs. They all used the same tricks.
"You want to sue us? You're welcome to try..." Aaron was furious with him and was about to stand up to threaten him. I quickly tugged at his clothes under the table and signaled for him to calm down.
Josiah wasn't scared at all and remained calm, "I forgot to congratulate Arianna. About the twins, I'm really happy for you. I believe that Monique will be relieved to hear that. You have to take care of your children, and you've just gotten divorced.
Anne is at the age where she will throw frequent tantrums. It would be very inconvenient for her to stay by your side. Let me take her away. Isn't that a win-win situation for everyone?"
"Bullsh*t! What kind of family are the Reids anyway? Can they even take proper care of a child?!" Aaron was so angry that he swore and shrugged me away. He stood up with a loud bang, "I'll tell you right now, even if Arianna and the servants can't take care of Anne, I, as long as I'm here, her uncle, you can forget about taking her away!"
He was so worked up that he couldn't control his voice for a moment. It was so abrupt in the quiet cafe that several customers turned around to look at us.
