Behind me, I could hear the police officers whispering to each other.
"Have you contacted any of her relatives?"
"They said that they don't have a daughter like her and have cut all ties with her a long time ago. They don't care whether she lives or dies!"
"There are parents who can be so cruel in this world?"
"Now isn't the time to talk about this. Hurry up and ask where the fire truck is!"
It was very obvious that when Shirley chose Irvin, she had also decided to cut all ties with her family. This caused her parents unimaginable grief.
Aside from Irvin, she had no one else to turn to.
I had just realized what a fool I was. My only hope now was for Shirley to think about her child and how much she loved him.
The corners of Shirley's lips began to curl upwards, revealing a mocking smile. I wasn't sure if she was laughing at herself or at someone else. She seemed very sure about something. She then looked at me with her sharp eyes. "I want to ask you something. Are you willing to marry Irvin and make his wish come true?"
"You already know..." I slowly put my hands down. Suddenly I wasn't sure of what to say.
No matter what I decided, she would ultimately be the one who would suffer the most.
"I don't want to hear that. I just want to know if you are willing!" Shirley's voice was so sharp, it almost cracked.
I said helplessly, "I won't. I'm Hendrix's wife. Marrying another would be bigamy."
After a brief pause, I added, "Even if there wasn't a law against it, I don't love Irvin. So no, I won't make the wrong decision. You know this as well. How do you think things will turn out when you force two people who don't love each other to be together? You've already been through so much turmoil in all these years. Haven't you suffered enough?"
The tension I had been suppressing before had now transformed into a forceful ball of energy. The more I spoke, the more I resented this situation. "Can you please stop putting yourself down Shirley?"
She probably hadn't expected me to burst out like that. She was completely dumbstruck.
