I frowned then bent down to pull Kelsey up but she refused to get up. While sobbing, she said, "Director Reid, only you can help me now. Calvin is a devil. In order for him to stand firm and tall in Alford Audit, I did what I wasn't supposed to do according to what he told me. It was only after that I found out that he's abusive. He'll fly into a rage and act moody from time to time. When that happens, he'll get violent with me. Sometimes, he would even kick me out of the house late at night. I really can't take it anymore. I'm now all alone without friends or family. You're now the only one I know who can help me. So please, please help me."
I didn't know how to react for a moment. Recollecting my thoughts, I said, "If you're not happy with him, you can just divorce him. It's easy for you now that he's being detained. You can find a new job, live a good life. Why do you need my help?"
Kelsey shook her head again. Tears streaming down her face. "It's no use. I called the police the first few times when he got violent with me. He got detained but a few days later, he was bailed out. He'll treat me even worse when he's out. I asked for a divorce but he disagreed. I'm now chained to him, and I have no idea how to break myself free. Please, please help me."
"How can I even help you?" I didn't know what to say. This was her family's affairs and I doubt that I could be of any help. Plus, normally, in this sort of situation, only she can give herself the help she needed.
Kelsey looked up with her red and swollen eyes. "Calvin relies on his position as the CEO of Alford Audit and also the power the Hammers possess. If he loses their help, he'll be detained for at least 3 years. By then, our marriage will be dissolute as we've lived separately for 3 years. Oh, Director, Mr. Roberts loves you so much. If you would just tell him, I'm sure he'll do as you say."
I frowned. I was a little speechless. When did Hendrix ever love me?
She opened her mouth to speak again but was interrupted.
"Arianna can't help you." Irvin came out to where we were at some point. He walked towards us and said, "She can't even protect herself now. So, obviously, she can't help you. Today's matter was because she was a little too impulsive. She never thinks about the consequences. You should know better than anyone else that if Arianna helped you, how your husband will take his revenge on her."
Saying that, Irvin dragged me away. I was stunned. When I turned around, I saw Kelsey kneeling on the ground, crying bitterly. My heart squeezed a little at the sight of it.
"Kelsey may actually really need my help!" I could not help but to say out loud following Irvin at his back.
"Ouch!" He stopped so suddenly that I knocked onto his back, hitting my nose. My nose felt a little numb from the pain of the impact.
"Arianna, do you know how laughable your good intentions are?" Irvin looked at me, his eyes dark with anger.
I didn't know why he got angry all of a sudden. I rubbed my nose and said, "It's not laughable at all. Kelsey worked with me for two years, I..."
"So? What's the big deal? Is she still with you now as your assistant? Is she still working for you? Arianna, can't you have a bottom line? Why must you have so much sympathy for every man and woman? Are you trying to look like a yes-man? For people to worship you?"
Irvin was so furious that his voice was low and fierce. The breath of his alcohol reached me. His eyes were red and bloodshot, indicating that he was drunk.
"You've had too much to drink, haven't you?" I stretched out my hand to help him up, but Irvin shook my hand off.
He grabbed my shoulder, stared dead into my eyes and snickered. "Do you also feel pity for me? I had to endure seeing Nerissa being a part of my life, my mother being kicked out by my dad and most of all my dad's indifferent treatment to me. Do you feel pity for all that I've been through?"
