Fairfax ended the call without another word. Silence settled over the office. He picked up his water glass and drained it in one gulp, but the cold water did nothing to quell the frustration churning inside him.
Just then, his phone rang again. It was Harley. His message was the same as Annika's. The fire Starla had started in Marina City was now scorching them all, and they were desperate to return and assess the damage. But no one could get back. Annika was stranded. And now Harley was, too.
“What in God’s name is going on between you and Starla?” Harley’s voice was sharp and furious over the phone. “Weren’t you the one who insisted on marrying her? What kind of monster did you bring into this family?”
Harley was livid. Starla wasn't even trying to hide her attacks; she was carrying them out in her own name. The woman who had been a non-entity after marrying into the family had now become their worst nightmare.
Fairfax said nothing. Harley’s tirade only amplified his own agitation. He reached for his water glass again, found it empty, and lit a cigarette instead.
“Why can’t we use our money?” Harley demanded. “Your grandmother’s accounts are blocked too! What has she done?”
“She’s done a lot,” Fairfax said wearily. “I don’t even know where to begin.”
“I don’t care where you begin! You need to fix this! What is the meaning of freezing all our spending?”
The word ‘fix’ made Fairfax’s head throb. Fix it, fix it. Wasn’t that what he’d been trying to do? But he couldn’t. It was the first time in his life Fairfax had encountered a problem he couldn't solve, and the powerlessness made him even more irritable.
When Fairfax remained silent, Harley’s voice grew louder. “Answer me!”
“I’m afraid I can’t fix this,” Fairfax said flatly.
“What?” Hearing his son, the man he had always been so proud of, admit defeat because of a woman, left Harley stunned. He couldn't believe his ears. “What did you just say, you fool? It’s just a woman. How can you say you can’t handle it?”
