Darleen, the one person in the Yelchin family who had once protected Brinley most fiercely, had already turned against her. It was easy to imagine the kind of life that awaited Brinley now.
“We won’t even need our backup plans,” Garret noted. “We can just sit back and watch the show.”
“And what a show it will be,” Starla mused. The entire Yelchin clan was practically ready to devour Fairfax. Annika was stuck in a nursing home, and Harley's home abroad had been burned down, leaving him, his mistress, and their child with nowhere to go. And that wasn't even mentioning the extended family.
“Do you think Fairfax will try to deflect the blame onto you?” Garret asked.
“He’ll probably try. But does he really think that trick will work on me now?” In the past, she might have feared such a move. But not anymore.
Garret smiled.
Outside the window, Brinley shivered violently in the cold. Her gaze fell upon Starla, whose bright, radiant smile was visible through the glass, and a wave of pure madness washed over her. This wasn’t how it was supposed to be. She was the one who should be inside, warm and comfortable.
“What are you doing now?” Darleen’s harsh voice cut through the air. Brinley had been standing still for less than a minute.
Starla’s strategy was truly brilliant. By tying their workloads together, she ensured no one could slack off, while simultaneously fueling the animosity between them.
Inside, Starla placed the last rose in a vase. A servant immediately came over to fill it with water and plant food.
She set down her scissors and turned to Garret. “Tonight, let’s have them all sleep in the same room.”
Currently, Brinley and Sally shared a room in the basement, while Darleen was with Xenia. Putting all four of them together was a calculated move.
“Yes, Miss,” Garret said, understanding immediately.
Brinley froze, her hands clenching into fists under the table.
“If I’m a dog, then what does that make you?” she shot back, her voice shaking with restrained fury.
Darleen’s face turned a shade of purple. “Who do you think is responsible for me being this way? It’s all your fault!”
“If you hadn’t done those things to her in the past, we wouldn’t be in this situation!”
“You’re a jinx!” Darleen shrieked, unleashing all her pent-up frustration on Brinley. “You killed my Faraday, and you’ve destroyed our entire family!”
The tables had turned completely. The very accusations Darleen once hurled at Starla were now aimed squarely, and with lethal intent, at Brinley.
