Besides, he was right. She was, in fact, deliberately tormenting Darleen and Brinley.
Seeing her casual indifference, Fairfax’s face turned ashen with rage, but he was utterly helpless against her.
“Have you found out how many people your mother has killed yet?” Starla asked abruptly.
The air in the room went still.
Fairfax’s eyes locked onto Starla’s, her own gaze holding a faint, smiling mockery.
He had never found her stare so suffocating, so piercingly painful.
Over the past few weeks, Fairfax had come to a basic understanding: whenever Starla caused trouble, it was never without reason. There was always a cause. If she kept bringing something up, it meant there was truth to it.
And how many times had she mentioned Darleen being a murderer? Just like she had repeatedly accused Brinley of causing her miscarriage.
Whether he had believed it or not, the truth had eventually come out…
Thinking of Brinley and Felix, Fairfax closed his eyes. “You knew about Brinley and Felix all along, didn’t you?”
“Yes,” Starla answered simply.
“Since when?”
“I found out not long after Faraday died.”
She had seen Felix and Brinley together, and Garret’s investigation after he came to her side only confirmed everything in greater detail.
Listening to her, it sounded as if watching the farce was her only option, as if she were completely powerless.
“And wasn’t I? Or are you trying to say you would have believed me if I’d said something? Think about it, Fairfax. How many times did I tell you things about Brinley, and how many times did you believe me? Not once.”
“I said she killed my baby! You said it was an accident.”
“I said her depression was fake. You said I was vicious for saying such a thing about a grieving widow.”
“If I had told you she was having an affair with Felix, you would have accused me of slandering her good name, wouldn’t you?”
“In your hearts, she’s so pure, isn’t she? So pure that any hint of negativity is an insult, something that would taint her perfect world.”
