For a long time after Faraday's death, Darleen hadn't been able to cope. The pain of losing her son was insurmountable. The only thing that had kept her going was Brinley—and the supposed child she carried. Plus, Brinley had constantly created so much household drama that Darleen rarely had a moment to sit and truly grieve.
Now that she didn't have to fuss over the baby or Brinley, the raw, agonizing reality of Faraday's death was hitting her full force. She was in constant torment. The thought that he had been murdered by his own wife and her lover pushed Darleen over the edge. She had been beating Brinley daily just to release her grief. Now, knowing the child was a complete fraud, she completely lost her mind.
"Why did you treat him like that?! Tell me why! He loved you so much, how could you do this to him?!" Darleen roared. "He gave you everything you ever asked for! He gave you the world! Why did you betray him?!"
The word *betray* echoed through the hall, dripping with raw fury.
Usually, when Darleen attacked her, Brinley would eventually fight back. But this time, her hands froze mid-air at the words, *He loved you so much.*
It was true. Faraday had been wonderful to her. Since the day they married, they had been inseparable, driving to work together, always side by side. So... why had she gotten involved with Felix?
Amidst the chaotic blows raining down on her, Brinley found herself asking that exact question. If Faraday had treated her so well, why did she stray?
Because... back then, Felix had seemed to treat her even better. He had been overwhelmingly attentive, surpassing even Faraday's devotion. That was why she had leaned toward him. But now she realized Felix's affection had been entirely fake. It had all been an act.
But Faraday? His love had been real. He was her husband.
