Hearing Brinley talking to Felix again had sent Darleen's blood pressure through the roof.
Brinley shivered violently. She glanced at Darleen, suddenly too emotionally drained to even argue back.
In silence, she walked over to grab some clothes, intending to take a hot shower. Then she remembered—the water heater had been shut off.
This was absolute hell.
She went into the bathroom to change into dry clothes, but her body was too cold to warm up. Even after stripping off the soaking wet fabric and pulling on dry layers, she was still shivering uncontrollably. Her skin was damp, making the clothes stick uncomfortably. As she struggled to dress herself, the sheer misery of it all finally broke her, and she began to sob uncontrollably.
Desperate, she called her mother, Harriet Seabrook.
The moment the call connected, she cried out, "Mom! I can't survive in this house anymore!"
Her voice was entirely devoid of hope.
Felix had abandoned her. The horrible things he had said on the phone confirmed he would never protect her. Regret, agony, and despair swallowed her whole. She was in so much pain, suffocating under the weight of her own ruin.
In her darkest moment, she just wanted the safety of her mother's arms.
But the voice that answered wasn't Harriet's.
"Miss Seabrook," Clyde's cold voice came through the speaker. "Your mother said you need to look out for yourself from now on. She has no time to deal with you."
"Why are you answering her phone?" Brinley snapped, her sadness instantly flashing into disgust.
She absolutely hated Clyde, her mother's assistant. She hated his son, Quest, even more. Quest had always been uncomfortably close to her mother, almost acting like he was trying to replace Brinley as the favorite child.
Unfortunately, despite being Harriet's only biological daughter, Brinley couldn't just get her way. Once, she had demanded Harriet fire Clyde and Quest. Harriet had slapped her across the face for being 'spoiled' and 'childish,' claiming Clyde was her right-hand man.
