Starla looked completely bewildered.
"If Fairfax is in the Cyrus Sea, dragging him out isn't going to be easy. Finalizing this divorce is going to take a while," Yardley explained calmly.
"Why won't it be easy? You're..."
Was there anywhere on earth that the Hoggart family couldn't reach? Not knowing where Fairfax was hiding was one thing. But now that they had his location, how hard could it be to just snatch him back?
"If he's there, it means he's officially backed by Amos Kunan," Yardley said, his tone turning grave.
Starla froze.
Amos Kunan. The name wasn't foreign to her. She remembered that Amos had once been Yardley's closest ally.
But that was in the past. Now? They were mortal enemies.
"My men cannot step foot in his territory," Yardley said, his voice dropping an octave.
If she listened closely, she could hear a complicated web of emotions tied to Amos's name. She couldn't decipher exactly what it was, but she understood the boundary. It wasn't about fear; it was about an unspoken, ironclad treaty.
"So, if he's hiding there, I can't divorce him until he actually decides to show his face?" she asked.
Yardley just looked at her, his silence confirming her worst fear.
She let out a frustrated sigh. "Fine. I get it. I missed my window to force his hand."
"You were overconfident," Yardley noted.
She had been so certain that pushing Fairfax to the absolute edge would guarantee he'd sign the papers. She hadn't factored in him just running away.
"Yeah, well. Having a brother like you makes it hard not to be confident," she admitted.
Her absolute fearlessness when destroying the Yelchins had stemmed directly from knowing he had her back.
