But the shameless man simply called right back. When it came to harassing her, Fairfax seemed to possess a bottomless well of energy. If she blocked him, he'd just switch to a burner phone. His entire strategy was to annoy her into submission.
Furious, Starla finally answered. "What do you want?"
"Herbert says he's taking you to the Black Sea. What's your take on that?"
Starla rolled her eyes. *What's my take? What am I supposed to think?* The men in her life were utterly exhausting.
"What exactly are you trying to ask me?" she snapped.
"Are you going with him?" Fairfax asked bluntly.
Her stance on this would reveal exactly where she stood with Herbert right now. Deep down, Fairfax was terrified.
So much had happened recently, and while Starla was clearly fighting with Herbert, her anger didn't seem as explosive and violent as it had been with Fairfax back in Marina City. Was it because she felt trapped now that she was back in Yoran Country? Did she miss the freedom she'd had in his territory?
Whatever the reason, Fairfax was terrified she still had feelings for Herbert.
It was a pathetic irony—Starla was legally his wife, yet here he was, agonizing over her feelings for another man.
"You really have way too much time on your hands," Starla replied coldly, refusing to humor the question.
"You're a smart woman, Starla. You know damn well Herbert's intentions aren't pure," Fairfax pressed.
At least he could acknowledge she had brains. When the board was unreadable, her instinct was always self-preservation. But against Herbert and the entire Hoggart family, she couldn't protect herself. Even as the pampered princess of the Hoggart dynasty, Fairfax was worried sick about her.
"And how is that any of your business?" Starla retorted.
"He's going to drag you to the Black Sea whether you like it or not. You won't be able to fight him off," Fairfax warned, his voice turning deadly serious.
At the words *won't be able to fight him off*, the temperature around Starla seemed to drop. The icy silence over the line was palpable, and Fairfax could feel the shift in her mood.
