Wendy made her way to the wishing tree.
Many of its branches had been tied into knots.
People said if you knotted a little branch while you made a wish, it would really come true.
Then, when it finally came true, you were supposed to come back and undo the knot, so your life would keep going smoothly afterward.
She'd heard the story from other students back in college.
At the time, she'd thought it was utterly ridiculous. Who would actually believe such nonsense?
Standing under the tree now, Wendy reached out and gently bent a branch toward her. It was covered in lush green leaves. With her slender, pale fingers, she carefully looped the branch and tied it into a perfect knot.
The tree was covered in countless knots, like countless wishes waiting to be unwrapped.
She clasped her hands together and made her wishes in silence.
First wish: For my family to be healthy and safe. For Baron Clifford to turn his life around, work hard, and become a responsible, dependable man.
Second wish: For the three women I love most to live long, happy lives, to always be beautiful and confident, and to be free from worry. And... for our friendship to last forever.
Third wish: For me to find love soon, and maybe have a cute baby like Nina's, and for the three of us to live happily ever after...
They were simple, ordinary wishes, but to her, they felt incredibly precious.
She didn't need money or fame; a quiet, steady life was all she ever wanted.
If only Baron could be a little more responsible, she could finally stop worrying. She hoped her wishes would come true.
After making her wishes, she opened her eyes.
The sun was exceptionally bright today.
Wendy Clifford gazed at the golden hue on the horizon, a small smile playing on her lips.
Surely, fate will be kind to me, she thought.
As she turned, she nearly collided with someone standing right behind her.
"Sorry."
