The woman sat up and moved to the edge of her bed, lowering her voice. "The doctors here said they needed to operate, to cut her open to see what was inside. Her family refused and transferred her to another hospital. I don't know what happened to her after that."
From her expression, it was clear she was still worried about the girl. After chatting a bit longer, the woman left to get lunch from the cafeteria.
Whether it was the heavy air in the ward or her own mood dragging her down, Janina felt her chest tighten.
Natalie had gone home to pick up dinner, so Janina decided to go outside for some fresh air. There was a garden below the inpatient building. The air in her room felt suffocating; the air outside was a welcome relief.
Lost in worry over her condition, she didn't have it in her to notice the flowers. She found an empty bench and sat down. As she looked up, she saw a familiar face.
Delicate and soft, with big, pleading eyes—it was Yvonne.
She was leaning languidly against a tall, slender man. His back was to her, but Janina recognized him instantly: Julius Aurelius.
Yvonne clutched her stomach, her voice a coquettish whine. "Julius, it hurts."
Julius gently patted her back, his voice soothing. "Just bear with it for a moment. I'll ask the doctor for some more medicine for you later."
Janina clenched her fists, cursing inwardly. "Damn my luck. Of course I'd run into them here."
