Hearing Marjorie defend West even now, Clark's temper flared. He was about to retort when she continued.
"You've got it all wrong. Those diary entries were written a long time ago, some when we were fighting. And the photo… it's not what you think. I haven't done anything to betray you."
Others might not have understood her meaning, but Clark did.
Marjorie was clearly implying that she had been kissing his picture, not West's.
"Let's go home and talk about this. I'm begging you. If you won't think about me, at least think about your own situation right now."
That last sentence snapped Clark, whose anger had started to waver, back to reality.
She was right. He was in a tough spot.
His own parents had abandoned him, threatening to cut him off. His friends were just fair-weather companions. Right now, Marjorie was the only one willing to help him.
If he pushed her away, he'd have nowhere to go.
With that thought, Clark's fury gradually subsided, though a hint of resentment remained. "Marjorie, promise me. You only have room in your heart for me. No one else."
Marjorie's eyes flickered toward West's grim face. She wished she could talk to him, but Clark had ruined everything.
For now, her only option was to placate Clark and get him to leave before he caused any more trouble.
With that in mind, Marjorie didn't answer him directly. Instead, she grabbed his arm. "Let's just go home."
When Clark hesitated, tears welled up in her eyes. "We'll go home right now, and I'll agree to anything you want, okay?"
Seeing her cry, Clark finally gave in. He sighed and reached out to wipe the tears from her cheeks. "Don't cry. We'll go home."
Then he looked at West and Easton, his tone awkward.
