"Don't worry, I'll take good care of Clark."
Clark's mother smiled warmly and patted her hand. She picked up a beautiful box from the table beside her. "Here, this is a little welcome gift for you. I hope you like it."
Marjorie hid her excitement and accepted it politely. "Thank you."
She opened it and found a necklace. The sparkle in her eyes vanished instantly.
The necklace couldn't have cost more than a few hundred dollars.
For a first meeting, such a cheap gift was a bitter disappointment.
But she didn't let it show. She kept a bright smile plastered on her face, acting as though she was absolutely thrilled with the necklace.
Seeing Marjorie's wide, toothy grin stretching from ear to ear, Clark's mother felt a flicker of contempt. *So unrefined*, she thought. *Like she's never seen anything nice in her life*.
Just as Marjorie looked up, she caught the disdain in the older woman's eyes. She dug her nails into her palm, the compliment she was about to offer dying on her lips.
So that was it. Clark's mother was completely two-faced. She clearly didn't approve of her, so why the fake smiles? Why lie and pretend to like her?
A sharp pain pierced Marjorie's heart. The feeling of being looked down upon was unbearable. She had put up with Clark for three years, enduring so much, only for his family to still find her unworthy.
Just as she was struggling to hold back tears, Clark returned.
Oblivious to what had just transpired, he saw his mother and girlfriend chatting happily and beamed. "Mom, Dad, Marjorie, let's head out for dinner. I've already booked a table."
