Seeing the scrapes on Yvonne's leg, a flicker of pain crossed Julius's eyes. He gently squeezed her arm. "Does it still hurt?" he asked softly.

Yvonne's eyes welled with tears, but she forced herself to shake her head. "As long as you're with me, the pain goes away."

Her words, however, made Julius involuntarily picture two adorable, sleeping faces. He let go of her hand. "You won't get any rest with me here. The doctor wants to keep you for observation overnight. I'll have someone pick you up tomorrow."

Yvonne had assumed Julius would stay with her. The thought of him leaving sent a wave of despair through her. She knew he had gone to see Janina and the babies today, and the idea was killing her. Was Julius still in love with Janina?

Lying pale in the hospital bed, she imagined him with Janina, his eyes full of tenderness as he looked at the children they shared. Yvonne's hands, hidden beneath the blanket, clenched into tight fists. It was all that bitch's fault for not letting go of Julius. Why did she have to give birth to the children after they were already divorced? Now, just a few months later, they had completely captured Julius's heart.

Lately, Julius had been so consumed with trying to see the children that he had even turned down her suggestion of a vacation together. Those two children should never have been born. Their very existence was a threat to her.

Yvonne smoothed her face into something fragile and wounded, like she might break if he left. As Julius stood up to leave, she looked at him with red-rimmed eyes. "Okay, Julius. If you have things to do, you should go. Don't worry about me. I'll be fine on my own."

Seeing her look so hurt yet so understanding, Julius's tone softened. "I'm sorry you have to go through this. Get some rest."

Since he was insistent on leaving, Yvonne knew she couldn't press the issue further. She forced a smile. "Don't be sorry. As long as you're okay, I'm okay. Go on, Julius. The nurses are here. I'll be fine."
