Seeing the positive result on the test strip, Clark's pupils dilated in shock. It felt as if a sharp knife had been plunged into his heart, the pain so intense he couldn't breathe.
An unprecedented wave of panic washed over him.
AIDS!
How could he possibly have contracted such a strange and terrifying disease?
Impossible!
It had to be impossible!
He instinctively retorted, "Don't try to fool me. I'm perfectly healthy. If I really had AIDS, my body would show some signs, but I don't feel anything."
Marjorie slapped the test strip against his face and snorted, her eyes dripping with contempt.
"Don't give me that. You've had a persistent low-grade fever recently. The doctor gave you medicine, but it keeps coming back. You think that's just a cold? And the nausea? Those are all early symptoms of HIV. You poor thing. You messed around and caught a disease. I guess this is what you call karma."
Clark wanted to argue that his fever was just a cold, but then he remembered it had been going on for a while. The words died in his throat.
Lately, he'd had headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, and nausea. The sores in his mouth kept coming back, too. He'd always dismissed them as symptoms of a common cold.
So it was...
He really had AIDS!
"No, I don't believe it! This isn't real..."
Clark screamed, completely breaking down. As terrifying as being kidnapped by Marjorie was, the news that he had AIDS plunged him into an even deeper despair.
His world felt like it was collapsing in that instant.
Seeing Clark's agony, Marjorie felt a surge of satisfaction. How could this lowlife who had ruined her possibly deserve to live?
But Marjorie wasn't buying it, nor did she care.
Her goal tonight was singular: revenge.
She slowly raised the scissors, the cold metal brushing against his skin. The hatred in her eyes intensified.
The chilling touch made Clark flinch. "Please, don't, Marjorie! Don't be rash! How about I take you abroad? We'll never come back, for the rest of our lives, I swear..." he sobbed.
"Don't call my name. It disgusts me. Every word you say now is utterly nauseating. What right do you have to bargain with me? I'm here to finish you tonight. Once you're dealt with, West and I can finally be together. Now, hold still. I'll be quick."
West?
Marjorie had West?
Before Clark could process the thought, Marjorie raised the scissors and brought them down on him...
