“Is that… is that Mr. Holt hanging up there?”
Janina’s gaze darted to the left. Her heart seized with terror at the sight of the suspended figure, terrified it was West. But as she took in the person’s build, height, and clothing, she realized it wasn’t him.
The hanging person’s head was slumped forward, their face obscured.
Maggie and Wendy heard Kenneth’s panicked question and looked up, their faces paling at the gruesome sight. When Janina choked out, “It’s not him,” they all let out a collective sigh of relief.
But their hearts were back in their throats as they faced the dozen black-clad bodyguards upstairs. If a fight broke out, they stood no chance. Their only option was to stall for time.
“Hey! Did your boss forget to pay you?” Maggie called out, her voice bold. “Those suits look so cheap. You must be hired muscle on a budget.”
At work, she was known for being no-nonsense and decisive. This wasn't the office, and these men weren't her employees, but she refused to let her fear show. So when she spoke, her voice was full of authority, her expression unwavering. Inside, she was a wreck, but she was putting on a brave face.
The bodyguards were momentarily stunned by her unexpected taunt. The burly leader’s face contorted with rage. “Shut your damn mouth! You’re looking to die!”
One of the other guards had already gone to get Marjorie.
Just as she was about to have her way, Marjorie was interrupted. She stormed out of the room, furious.
West’s shirt buttons had been undone, revealing his toned chest. With trembling hands, he pulled the fabric together and began inching his way toward the door.
“Grab them. Do whatever you want with the others, but she…” Marjorie pointed a finger directly at Janina. “I want her captured alive.”
“After this is done, it’s one million for each of you.”
That was all it took. The bodyguards cracked their knuckles and prepared to move.
A million bucks? These were desperate men who had trouble finding legitimate work. For a one-night payout like that, they would do anything.
Tempted by the money, the thugs didn't hesitate for a second. They thundered down the stairs, moving to seize the group below. In their eyes, the three women and three men standing before them posed no threat at all.
