Julius and Elena seethed through the entire meal.
As Liam and Joy’s closest relatives, they were being treated like outsiders.
But with so many people at the party, they couldn't make a scene. They had to swallow their anger for the time being.
Unlike Julius and his mother, the Holt family’s mood was entirely unaffected. They enjoyed their meal with gusto.
By the time the party ended and the guests had been seen off, it was already past two in the afternoon.
Grace and Ethan were holding Liam and Joy.
Julius stood by the door, a cold expression on his face. The couple walked right past him with the children.
“Liam, Joy, Daddy brought you birthday presents,” Julius called out, striding after them.
He was ostensibly talking to the children, but his real message was for Grace and Ethan: Don’t be in such a hurry to leave. Can’t you see their father and grandmother are still here?
Julius and Elena moved to block Grace and Ethan’s path.
Seeing that the banquet hall was now empty except for the Holts, Elena, who had been bottling up her rage, dropped the pretense. Her gaze shot towards Janina, who was walking behind Grace.
“It was bad enough that you wouldn’t let us sit at the same table as the children, but now you’re just whisking them away? We’re not their enemies; we’re their family. Do you have to be so cruel?”
Hearing Elena’s angry accusation, Janina met her gaze without flinching.
“You’re the ones who went too far. You invited all these strangers without consulting me once. Let’s be clear: the children’s last name is Holt. They have little to do with you. What, are you trying to latch onto them now? If you want grandchildren so badly, go find someone else to have them for you.”
“Janina!”
Before Elena could retaliate, Julius, incensed by Janina’s sarcastic tone, exploded. He bit out her name through clenched teeth.
