The three of them took care of Grace and Ethan.
Janina and Wendy looked after Liam and Joy.
With four family members poisoned, everyone was on edge.
Fairchild was the busiest of all.
As soon as he finished treating Liam and Joy, he had to rush to treat Grace and Ethan.
He grumbled and cursed under his breath as he administered the needles, muttering nonstop that the Holts must have rocks for brains.
He wondered aloud if someone had put a hex on the family, swearing that when he got back to the countryside, he would check the Holt family cemetery to see if the graves had been desecrated or struck by lightning.
When Land, the housekeeper, came upstairs to call everyone for breakfast, a furious roar from Fairchild stopped her in her tracks.
“Eat, eat, that's all you people think about!” Fairchild's voice boomed like thunder.
“People are practically on their deathbeds and you're thinking about food? You should all be heading to the hospital! A bunch of invalids, just looking at you is frustrating!”
After his tirade, he clasped his hands behind his back, stomped downstairs, plopped into a chair at the dining table, grabbed a bread roll, and started devouring it with gusto.
Land stood frozen, dumbfounded by Fairchild's bizarre behavior.
Had he escaped from a mental institution?
She glanced at the Holts, who all looked grim-faced, and swallowed the words she was about to say. Lowering her head, she hurried back downstairs.
Grace and Ethan were feeling much better, though they didn’t know why they had fainted.
The couple assumed they were just exhausted from taking care of the children these past few days and never once considered that they might have been poisoned.
Fairchild didn’t say anything, only grunted, “Let’s talk after breakfast. I'm starving!”
After breakfast,
the family trooped upstairs again, gathering in Fairchild’s room.
He swept his gaze over them and got straight to the point.
“You two have been poisoned as well, with the same thing as the children. The source isn't in the food. I need to check your rooms.”
The “you two” Fairchild was referring to were Grace and Ethan.
