After Isabella finished speaking, she turned around and pressed the intercom. “Nana, please call security and have them escort these people out,” she said calmly.
Peter’s face twisted with anger. “We’re not leaving until you give us the money!”
Isabella didn’t even glance at him. “You’re not leaving? Fine, I’ll call the police.”
She picked up her phone and dialed. “And what about your grandsons, granddaughters, all those kids? Don’t you all have any shame? Once the police take you away, you won’t even be able to keep your small businesses running.”
Peter puffed up, trying to look intimidating. “Go ahead and call! What, do you think I’m scared? I’m your grandfather. It’s only right for me to ask my granddaughter for money.”
The rest of the family jumped in, voices overlapping, blaming and scolding Isabella.
She tuned them out, not even flinching as she tapped in the emergency number and put the phone to her ear.
Watching her actually call the police, everyone started to panic a little. They’d thought Isabella would be easy to push around, but she wasn’t backing down at all. In fact, she was tougher than they’d expected. They all knew deep down that they’d treated Cynthia and Isabella badly before, and honestly, the demands they’d just made were way out of line.
If the police showed up and took them to the station, they’d have no defense at all.
“Oh, and officer, I’d like to report something else,” Isabella said into the phone, her voice steady. “Over twenty years ago, my grandparents and uncles tried to sell me and my mom. My uncle saved us, and there were plenty of witnesses.”
“Is there any way they can be held responsible? Now they’re here again, trying to blackmail and threaten me.”
The George family fell completely silent.
Paul suddenly lost it. He shot to his feet and rushed at Isabella, reaching for her phone and yelling, “You stupid girl, what are you talking about? When did I ever try to sell you?”
“Nobody move! Police!” one of the officers shouted.
The George family was stunned. They hadn’t expected the police to show up so fast. After Isabella knocked Paul down, their anger had hit a boiling point and someone had started the mob, so they’d all piled on.
Now the police had walked in and seen everything. There was no way they could talk their way out of this.
Nana finally managed to squeeze through the crowd and gently helped Isabella up. Seeing Isabella’s pale face streaked with tears, looking completely rattled, Nana turned to the officers.
“Officers, these people barged in and started demanding money from Isabella. They wanted cash, a house, a car—everything.” Her voice trembled with anger. “When Isabella refused, they ganged up on her and tried to take everything by force. These people don’t care about the law or anyone else. And when Isabella tried to call you, they said even the police couldn’t do anything to them.”
The George family had nothing left to say.
