“Think about it. Ever since Natalie married Jordan, you’ve practically handed The Lane Group endless business opportunities and favors. Half of their success is thanks to you. If nobody had stepped in, you probably would have left all your money to Natalie when you got old.”
Ethan’s face went even paler. He hated to admit it, but once, that had been his plan. Since his marriage to Isabella was just for show and they’d never have kids, he figured that when the time came, he’d split some of his assets with Isabella as a kind of consolation, then leave the rest to Natalie. Natalie was the woman he loved most, after all.
“That’s exactly what Natalie wants. She wants your love and your money. She has you completely under her thumb.” Stephanie let out a heavy sigh. “I know I’m old, and sometimes what I say isn’t easy to hear. You stopped listening to my advice a long time ago. If you’d just listened, even once, maybe you and Isabella wouldn’t have gotten divorced. Maybe Isabella wouldn’t be dead.”
“Ethan, you’ll owe Isabella for the rest of your life, owe her everything. Her death is tied to you, whether you want to admit it or not. Maybe you didn’t kill her, but she died because of you. If you don’t do everything you can to get her justice, to find out the truth and expose the real killer, Isabella will never really be at peace.”
The color drained from Ethan’s face. Stephanie could see his hands starting to tremble.
She reached out, giving his arm a gentle pat. “I know this hurts, but you can’t run from the truth forever. You need to look into Natalie thoroughly. If she’s innocent, then she has nothing to hide. But if she’s guilty, no matter how much it hurts, you have to listen to your conscience. If a person can’t do that, what’s left?”
Stephanie was making herself clear—if Natalie was really the one who killed Isabella, Ethan had to turn her in. Love couldn’t be a shield. Murder meant consequences. Natalie couldn’t believe that being loved by two men made her untouchable. Letting her get away with this wouldn’t protect her, it would destroy her.
Besides, even if Ethan couldn’t go through with it, Stephanie wouldn’t just let it go. She’d take any evidence right to the police herself. No matter what Ethan decided, justice was coming for Natalie.
