His jaw tightened, the muscle there twitching, and he turned to face
me fully, golden eyes flashing with something that might have been
concern, quickly masked by irritation.
“Shut up,” he commanded, his Alpha voice resonating in the small
space.
The doors opened on my floor, and Drake practically carried me down
the hallway. My head lolled against his shoulder. I tri o walk
normally, but my feet dragged across the carpet, barely lifting with
each step.
When we reached my room, Drake pulled my key card from my purse
without asking permission, his movements efficient and impersonal.
The door swung open, and he deposited me on the bed with
surprising gentleness that made my throat tighten with unwanted
emotion.
“You’re burning up,” he muttered, pressing a palm to my forehead. His
hand felt blessedly cool against my skin, and I had to fight the urge to
lean into his touch.
“M’fine,” I slurred, trying to sit up and failing miserably. The room
spun like a goddamn tilt–a–whirl, and I collapsed back onto the

pillows with a groan that sounded pathetic even to my own ears.
Drake pulled out his phone and dialed, turning away from me.
“Taylor, I need you to bring medication to the twenty–second floor.
Fever reducers. And find someplace that delivers fish porridge.” His
voice brooked no argument. “No, not room service. I don’t trust the
food here. Get it from outside. Now.”
I tried to focus on his face, but it kept blurring at the edges like a bad
photograph. My eyelids felt heavier by the second, weighted down by
exhaustion and whatever shit was in that drink.
“Why are you doing this?” I whispered, the words barely audible as I
curled onto my side, hugging my arms around my middle. “Just leave
me alone… to suffer in peace…”
Drake didn’t answer, simply standing at the foot of the bed, watching
me with that unreadable expression I’d never been able to decipher,
even after all these years.
A knock at the door roused me from my half–conscious state. Drake
strode across the room and opened it a crack, his broad shoulders
blocking my view.

“Here’s everything you asked for, sir,” Taylor’s voice came through the
gap.
“Give it to me,” Drake demanded, not inviting him in, his hand
extended impatiently.
“Sir, is there anything else I can do to-”
“No. Go back downstairs.” Drake’s tone left no room for argument.
I heard Taylor sigh. “Sir, Ava Kim has been lingering near your door
for the past hour. She claims she needs to discuss so ing urgent
with you.”
“Handle it,” Drake snapped, and then the door closed with finality,
the lock clicking into place.
I heard the rustle of a paper bag and the clink of a spoon against a
bowl as Drake approached the bed. I forced my heavy eyelids open,
blinking rapidly to clear my vision.
“Sit up,” he ordered, his voice softer than before but still
commanding.
I struggled to comply, my arms shaking with the effort, sweat beading
on my forehead from just that small movement. “Fuck,” I breathed,

unable to lift myself more than a few inches.
Drake muttered something under his breath that sounded
suspiciously like a curse before sliding an arm behind my shoulders
and lifting me into a sitting position. The sudden proximity made my
wolf stir, recognizing its Alpha despite my human brain’s
protestations. His scent enveloped me, making my head spin for
reasons entirely unrelated to my illness.
“Take this,” he said, pressing two pills into my palm and holding a
glass of water to my lips.
I obediently swallowed the medication, too weak to argue and too
desperate for relief to care about my pride in that moment.
“The porridge next,” he instructed, bringing a spoonful to my mouth,
his hand steady beneath it to catch any drips.
I parted my lips without thinking, accepting the food like a child. The
warm, soothing broth slid down my throat, settling my churning
stomach. After several spoonfuls, Drake’s mouth twisted into a
sardonic smile that made me want to slap him.
