we’ll get a room with full–length mirrors so you can see exactly how
pathetic you look when you’re drugged and helpless.”
Heat rushed to my face, anger and humiliation intertwining inside
“Eat,” he commanded, pushing a plate of eggs and toast toward me, his voice carrying an authority that brooked no refusal.
I rolled my eyes, deliberately ignoring it, reaching only for a glass of orange juice. “I’m not fucking hungry.”
Drake’s eyes narrowed, that predatory gaze sending chills down my spine. “There are several excellent photos from last night that would look fantastic on the bulletin board. Eat the fucking food, Elsa.”
My hand visibly trembled as I picked up a piece of toast, my nails digging into the soft bread. “You wouldn’t dare.”
“Try me. His voice was soft but laced with threat, his eyes cold enough to freeze my blood.
I forced myself to take a bite, then another, washing it down with

tight I could barely breathe.
There was a slight pause. “She had some breathing difficulties last
night, but she’s stable now.”
My knees nearly buckled, one hand bracing against the cold wall for
balance. “Why didn’t you call the doctor?”
“I did, Ms. Hale. They adjusted her medication. Janet’s voice shifted. “Actually, I was calling about this month’s payment. It’s the fifth
already, and I haven’t received-”
“I’ll transfer it right now,” I cut her off, relief and guilt washing over me in equal measure. I leaned against the wall, letting out a long breath, my heartbeat gradually returning to normal.
I quickly completed the transfer, still feeling unsteady on my legs. The silver poisoning treatments were draining my savings at an alarming rate, but I couldn’t lose Janet. Good caregivers willing to work with silver poisoning patients were rare.
After finishing the call, I noticed another missed call–Allen. I dialed him back, desperate for any conversation that wasn’t with Drake,
“Elsa?” Allen’s voice was warm with concern. “I’ve been worried. You disappeared from the bar last night.”

I stopped, cursing under my breath. Without looking back, I said,
“Have Taylor bring my clothes down to the lobby.”
Drake’s chuckle followed me as the elevator doors closed. Twenty
minutes later, dressed in the clothes Taylor had brought, I stormed
through the hotel lobby toward the exit. That damned Alpha’s scent
still clung to my skin despite a scalding shower, and I needed to get
away before I did something stupid–like slap him or, worse, kiss him
back.
Taylor stood by a black SUV at the curb. “Ms. Hale, I’m to take you
wherever you need to go.”
“No thanks.” I stepped past him and raised my hand for a taxi, fingers
impatiently tapping against my thigh.
When one pulled up, I quickly climbed in. “The city police station, I
said loudly enough for Taylor to hear.
The driver nodded, pulling into traffic. In the side mirror, I could see
Taylor getting into the SUV, obviously following Drake’s orders to
trail me. I bit my lip hard enough to taste blood.
