Chapter 211
Elsa
I woke with a jolt, my heart hammering against my ribs like it was
trying to escape. The sterile scent of disinfectant burned my nostrils,
reminding me I was in a hospital. My arm throbbed with pain, a
constant, pulsing reminder of the knife that had sliced through my
flesh. As my vision cleared, I became aware of a warm pressure
against my fingers–someone was holding my hand.
I turned my head and froze, my stomach dropping like a stone. Drake
was lying in the adjacent hospital bed, his large hand engulfing mine.
He was asleep, his chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. Even
unconscious, his face maintained that arrogant expression, like he
owned the world–and me.
“What the fuck,” I whispered, yanking my hand away so violently that
the sudden movement sent a sharp pain shooting through my injured
arm. I winced, clenching my teeth to keep from crying out. “What the
hell are you doing here?” I hissed, my fingers curling into a fist.
Drake’s eyes snapped open, those golden flecks in his dark irises.
seeming to glow in the dim light. He raised an eyebrow, his lips
curving into that infuriating smirk I’d grown to hate with every fiber
of my being.

Chapter 211
“I paid for this room,” he said, his voice rough with sleep. “Why
wouldn’t I be here?”
“I want to change rooms,” I said, already reaching for the call button,
my fingers trembling with anger and something else I refused to
acknowledge. “Immediately. Goddamn it, I’m not staying here with
you.”
“Don’t bother,” he said, his voice dropping to that low, commanding
tone that made my wolf want to roll over and submit. My body
betrayed me with a shiver. “Weren’t you ready to die for me earlier?
Now you can’t even share a room?”
My fingers froze over the button. Heat rushed to my cheeks as my
mouth opened and closed soundlessly. “That’s not–I wasn’t-” I
stammered, feeling like an idiot.
“You weren’t what? Weren’t ready to throw yourself between me and a
knife? Because that’s exactly what you tried to do.” His eyes held
mine, searching for something I wasn’t willing to give, something I
wasn’t even sure I possessed.
I looked away first, hating the small victory it gave him. My teeth dug
into my lower lip as I stared at the ceiling, blinking rapidly. “How bad
is it?” I finally asked, my voice softer than I intended. “Your wound, I
mean.”

Chapter 211
Drake shifted in his bed, wincing slightly. “No internal damage. The blade went deep, but missed anything vital. Blood loss was the main
concern.” He paused, studying me with an intensity that made my
skin prickle and flush. “Why did you do it, Elsa? Why try to save
someone who’s been nothing but cruel to you?”
The question caught me off guard. I wanted to lie, to tell him it was instinct, nothing personal. But my mouth had other ideas. “I didn’t want you to get hurt,” I admitted softly, fidgeting with the edge of the
blanket. “When I saw him coming at you with that knife… I just
reacted. Fuck if I know why.”
“With your high heel and purse,” Drake said, the corner of his mouth
twitching. “Not exactly traditional weapons.”
“They worked, didn’t they?” I couldn’t help the small smile that
formed on my lips, my fingers unconsciously mimicking the swinging
motion I’d made with my purse. “The look on his face when I hit him
with my shoe was almost worth getting stabbed for.”
For a moment, something almost like respect flickered across Drake’s
face. “You’re tougher than you look, Elsa.”
