“Boss,” one of my guys ventured cautiously, shifting his weight from
foot to foot, “that was the Moonlight guy. Allen Moonlight. Real
estate family.”
I slammed my fist down, ignoring the pain that shot through my
body. “They’re all connected, you idiot! Stone, Moonlight–they think
they run this fucking city.”
“What do you want us to do?” another asked, his eyes darting
nervously to my mangled knee.
I thought for a moment, my mind clouded by pain and medication.
The room seemed to pulse around me, the edges of my vision
darkening. “We can’t touch Stone directly, and this Moonlight asshole
is too well protected…”
“What about the girl’s cousin?” suggested my youngest recruit, eager
to prove himself. “That Oliver kid–no pack, no family backing him.
Easy target.”
A smile spread across my face despite the pain. “Perfect. Send a
message that way. Make it bloody.”

“Your security detail is… taking a nap,” he replied, setting the glass
down on a side table with a soft clink. “As for me, I’m Eric. I believe
you’ve had some dealings with my friend Drake recently.”
My blood ran cold. The remaining color drained from my face as I
realized just how badly I’d miscalculated. I swallowed hard, my throat
suddenly dry as sand.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said, my voice betraying
me with a slight tremor.
Eric’s smile never reached his eyes. “Let’s not insult each other’s
intelligence, Samuel. You orchestrated an attack on Drake. Did you
really think there wouldn’t be consequences?”
One of my guys lunged at Eric, desperation making him reckless. The
man moved with inhuman speed, sidestepping the attack and driving
his elbow into my guy’s throat with sickening precision. The sound of
cartilage crushing was followed by desperate gagging as my man
collapsed to the floor, hands clutching his ruined throat.
“Now,” Eric continued as if nothing had happened, straightening his
cuffs with meticulous care, “do you understand what it means to
harm someone under Drake Stone’s protection?”
