Chapter 284
Ava
I spotted Drake in the executive parking garage, his tall figure impossible to miss as he slammed the door of his Maserats with enough force to potentially damage it. His face was a thundercloud, and employees scattered from his path like frightened rabbits. I rolled my eyes, adjusting my purse strap as I deliberately stepped into his warpath.
“What’s got you looking like you want to murder someone?‘ I asked, planting myself directly in front of him, one hip cocked defiantly
Drake’s golden eyes flashed with irritation, actually glowing slightly in the dim garage lighting. ‘Not now, Ava,‘ he snarled, moving to step around me.
I sidled right back into his path, crossing my arms over my chest. “It’s about Elsa, isn’t it?” I persisted, noticing how he flinched slightly at her name, his jaw muscle twitching visibly. “I saw the business section this morning. She’s working for Joseph now. Well, good for her.”
“Get in the car,” he growled, unlocking the vehicle again with a violent jab at his key fob.
I raised an eyebrow, leaning back slightly. “Excuse me?”
“If you want to discuss this, get in the car,” he repeated, his voice dropping to that dangerous alpha tone. “I’m not having this conversation in the fucking garage.”
Knowing better than to argue with Drake in this mood, I slid into the passenger seat, tossing my purse onto the floor with deliberate carelessness. He got in beside me but didn’t start the engine, just gripped the steering wheel with white–knuckled intensity, his breathing slightly elevated.
“She’s doing it to spite me,” he finally said, his voice dangerously quiet as he stared straight ahead through the windshield. Taking Joseph s offer, appearing with him at that summit… it’s a deliberate provocation.”
“Can you blame her?” I asked, watching his profile carefully, absently twisting a ring on my finger. “After what you did?*
His head snapped toward me, eyes flashing gold. “What I did? I saved her mother’s life. I provided for her for ten years. I protected her.
I snorted loudly, unable to contain my disbelief. “You also treated her like a possession, I pointed out, jabbing a finger at his chest. “You tried to block her from getting any other job. You threatened her with those private photos. Did you really expect her to just come crawling back after all that bullshit?”
Drake’s jaw clenched, a muscle jumping beneath his skin. “She’s being reckless. Moonlight is dangerous.”
“So are you,” I countered, my voice rising with emotion. The difference is, Moonlight is offering her respect and proper compensation. He’s got
making her suck his dick in exchange for basic human dignity.
“I respected her,” Drake protested, but there was a hint of uncertainty in his voice as his hands finally dropped from the steering wheel
I couldn’t help but laugh, the sound harsh and bitter in the confined space of the luxury car “No, you fucking didnt. You valued her skills,
sure. But you never respected her as a person with her own desires and agency.
