Like shopping for cattle at the market. What a piece of shit. I nodded curtly and turned to leave, my skin still burning where he’d touched
Outside, I found Kayla at her desk, organizing files. She looked up with a knowing smile.
“Vera got called to HR,” she whispered. “Word is she’s being transferred to the North District branch.”
We exchanged a look that needed no explanation. This was Drake’s standard method for disposing of women who didn’t meet his
expectations-a “promotion” to a location far from headquarters. The graveyard of failed conquests. At least they don’t know what he did
to them. Lucky bitches.
“I’m the only one who’s survived the rotation and stayed,” I said with a bitter smile, sinking into the chair across from her. My insides
twisted at the implications of that statement. What did it say about me that I’d endured this for so long?
“Who’s going to replace her this time?”
“Another innocent college graduate?” Kayla raised an eyebrow.
I sighed, opening my laptop. “Not easy to find. Someone who can be both a competent assistant and a bedmate-what a fucking headache.” And I’m the madam in this high-class brothel, hand-picking the next victim.
That afternoon, I was reviewing recruitment profiles when Drake emerged from his office, looming over my desk. My skin prickled with awareness, my wolf responding to his Alpha presence even as I mentally told her to shut the hell up.
“Why aren’t you sitting at your designated place?” he demanded, his eyes scanning my screen, noticing the male candidates I’d been
reviewing.
“I’m screening applicants,” I explained, fighting the urge to cover the screen like a guilty teenager.
“My tastes don’t run that way,” he said coldly, making it clear he wanted only female candidates. “Drive me home after work. Don’t bring
that piece of shit car of yours.”
I bit my lip and nodded, mentally calculating how I’d get back to retrieve my own car afterward. Just one more week of this bullshit. You
can make it. For Mom.
At the end of the day, I waited in the parking garage, leaning against Drake’s sleek black luxury sedan. I was lost in thoughts about ending this twisted relationship when Drake appeared at the entrance, with Vera trailing behind him, her eyes red and puffy.
“Drake, I don’t understand, her voice was soft and trembling, the perfect damsel in distress. “Why am I being transferred? What did I do
wrong?”
Oh, honey. You didn’t do anything wrong. You just weren’t a good enough fuck toy for His Highness. Drake’s cold gaze shifted to me,

clearly signaling that this was my problem to solve. With a sigh, I stepped away from the car and intercepted Vera.
“Mr. Stone was interested in me,” she accused, tears smudging her perfect makeup.

“Did you fulfill all the conditions I mentioned?” I countered, keeping my voice professional while my insides churned with disgust-at
Drake, at myself, at this whole fucked-up system we perpetuated.
Vera opened her mouth, then closed it. I knew she wanted to say Drake hadn’t slept with her, but she was too embarrassed to admit it publicly. Thank god for small mercies. At least she was spared that particular humiliation.
“This is just a rotation, Miss Horton,” I said calmly. “Besides, I’m leaving next week.”
Vera’s eyes suddenly brightened. “Really? So I might come back to replace you?”
