“Couldn’t fool you, huh? Then let’s carry on with the banquet.”

Everyone was speechless.

“Well, then I guess that’s their secret,” Aurora said, still puzzled. She couldn’t really comment. She was still new here.

Edward and Diana were the ones most embarrassed.

They knew this was how the two always clashed, yet they still had to play along with the act every single year. At this point, they were nearly traumatized by the routine.

Philip waved cheerfully to the crowd. “Alright, stop staring. This is just how my son and I get along. Don’t take it to heart. Eat, everyone, let’s eat.”

The others forced polite smiles. Since Philip had put it that way, they couldn’t very well press the matter. To make a fuss now would only make them look foolish.

Just then, Edwin leaned back in his seat and casually remarked, “Lucas, you’ve worked with Yvonne for years. A strong, independent woman like her suits you far better.

“Miss Walton looks delicate–she may not be able to handle the burdens of the Carter family.”

Aurora’s expression stiffened at his words.

Even Diana and Edward looked displeased. They hadn’t expected Edwin, barely back at the table, to bring something like this up so bluntly.

Philip gave a cold snort, signaling for Edwin not to go too far.

This granddaughter–in–law was one he had publicly acknowledged. If Edwin undermined that now, it would disgrace the family in front of everyone. Wouldn’t that only invite ridicule?

Lucas‘ face darkened as he cut in sharply. “My wife is not yours to judge. Aurora’s capabilities are recognized throughout the entire industry.”
