“I think we should tighten the security around the villa,” Kenneth said firmly.
Judy hesitated. “Wouldn’t that be too much trouble? What if he just came once and doesn’t show up again?”
Though she said it that way, she knew perfectly well Joseph wouldn’t stop at one visit. He’d be back again and again.
Kenneth, however, wasn’t entirely convinced by her words.
He could tell she was downplaying things, but he chose not to call her out on it. If she wanted to believe that story for now, he’d let her. He’d deal with the rest himself.
“It’s fine. You don’t have to worry about it. I’ll handle everything,” he said with quiet resolve.
Hearing that, Judy felt a warmth spread through her chest.
It felt good to have someone protect her for once.
But deep down, she also understood one thing clearly.
Joseph had once held her the same way, promising the same safety. And look how that ended.
If she put all her trust in Kenneth, their story might end just like the last one—two people growing resentful of each other.
“Thank you,” Judy said softly, her tone sincere.
Kenneth frowned and pulled her into his arms. “Don’t say that. Hearing you thank me like that only makes me unhappy. Between us, there’s no need for that kind of formality.”
