"What if he doesn't care?" Barney asked. "I think that, in his heart, you might be the most important thing of all..."
"But I can't forgive myself," Khloe said.
No one understood better than she did how difficult forgiveness could be.
Even if Nick were willing to forgive her, she couldn't bring herself to ask for it. She couldn't bear the thought of making him endure that kind of suffering all over again.
Ever since he had been with her, he had done nothing but get hurt.
And the members of Lacuna were like a ticking time bomb. No one knew when they might come after her again. As long as Nick remained by her side, he would throw himself in front of danger to protect her. She didn't want to keep living in constant fear of losing him.
Knowing there was no changing Khloe's mind, Barney placed an invitation on the table.
"There's a business summit in Goldmont City tomorrow night. It's being held in conjunction with Hunt Group's charity fundraising campaign. I heard Nick will be attending in person. Morrison Group has also been invited to give a speech. I've arranged a seat for you in secret. If you go, you'll see him."
With that, Barney rose and left.
Khloe reached out and touched the invitation.
Her gaze darkened instantly.
The following evening, a steady stream of guests arrived at the entrance of the Goldmont City Business Summit.
Khloe arrived early and entered through a private passageway that led directly to the second floor of the venue.
The seat Barney had arranged for her was discreetly located with an excellent view. From there, she could clearly see the seats reserved for the prominent guests in the front row, as well as the stage.
Nick's nameplate had already been placed at his seat.
Though the chair remained empty, Khloe stared at it for quite some time.
Her thoughts drifted back to that charity gala. He had traveled thousands of miles to see her, throwing her emotions into complete turmoil. Back then, she had been alone and helpless, nearly pushed into a humiliating situation with no way out.
Now, things were different. She had long since grown strong enough to stand on her own. She no longer needed anyone to support her.
And yet... his existence alone still had the power to unsettle her heart.
"Mr. Hunt, this way, please."
Suddenly, Khloe heard a faint voice outside the private suite.
