Adrian looked to Isabel, seeking her approval.
Isabel walked over. "I don't have a problem with it. It's up to you."
Adrian's face lit up. Without a second thought, he shook Julian's hand and called out, "Brother-in-law."
Julian pulled his hand back. "Good boy."
Adrian felt a shiver of disgust.
Julian pulled Isabel outside and asked, "Have you made up your mind?"
Isabel said, "You figured it out a long time ago."
"I did, but I was still holding out a sliver of hope. Someone promised they would marry me if they got a divorce."
"But I also said that if I don't get a divorce, you'll always be my dear brother."
"Fine." A smile bloomed in Julian's charming eyes, masking some of his other feelings. "As long as you've made your choice. If he ever dares to bully you again, I, as his brother-in-law, have every reason to teach him a harsh lesson."
"Of course."
Isabel returned to the hospital room. Julian didn't follow, but Adrian's gaze never left her.
Edmund noticed and sidled up to him. "Why are you staring at my mommy?"
If it had been any other child, Adrian would have answered him. But this was Edmund.
He said, "You know very well why."
Edmund raised a small fist. "I promised Mommy I wouldn't use my professional skills to do bad things, so I can't use drugs on you anymore. But my fists are still very hard. You'd better not bully my mom. If she sheds a single tear, you'll pay for it with blood."
Adrian held out his left hand and gave him a fist bump.
"Don't worry."
And just like that, everything was settled.
But there was still no improvement in Adrian's legs.
In the end, Isabel's acupuncture did manage to restore enough function for him to hold a pen in his right hand.
Adrian smiled. "As long as you don't kill me in the process, I trust you."
Another month passed. Just when Adrian was about to suggest she give up, though he didn't dare say it out loud...
A check-up revealed that the shrapnel had moved.
Dr. Lawson immediately scheduled a surgery and removed the small piece of metal.
After two weeks of recovery, Adrian could move his legs again.
But after being bedridden for so long, he still needed physical therapy.
Meanwhile, Isabel's lab entered its busiest phase.
She had developed a new drug, C1, and was swamped with celebrations, press conferences, and meetings with contacts from Adrian's network.
