Chapter 17 We’ve Become Like Strangers
Hugh rummaged around for a thermometer. “Let’s check your temperature. If it’s really high, I’ll take you to the hospital.”
Megan looked worried. “I hope your wife isn’t mad at you for coming here so late.”
Hugh shook his head. “She won’t be.”
Megan offered, “Should I call her and explain?”
Hugh started unpacking the food he’d bought. “Don’t worry about her. She’s probably fast asleep by now.”
Hugh checked Megan’s thermometer, and it read 99.04°F.
He put the thermometer down, and his eyes accidentally caught sight of Megan in her sexy nightgown. Without hesitation, he grabbed a light blanket and gently draped it around her.
As Hugh was about to leave, he reminded her, “Take your medicine after the late-night snack.”
Megan pulled the blanket around herself a bit clumsily. “Hugh, my mom picked up my son. It’s pouring cats and dogs outside!

It’s not safe for you to drive back. Why don’t you crash here for the night?”
Hugh’s expression turned a bit more serious.
Megan quickly explained, “It’s so late, and you’ve got work tomorrow. I’m worried you won’t get enough rest if you go back and forth.”
Hugh stopped and faced her. “Megan, don’t ever ask me to stay over again, got it?”
Megan feigned innocence. “What’s the big deal, Hugh? You took care of me all night at the hospital before, and nothing happened, right?”
Hugh’s eyes showed obvious exhaustion.
He said, “I stayed with you at the hospital because it was a public place, with other people around. But this is your place. It’s not good for your reputation to have a married man stay overnight.”
Megan gave him a sweet smile. “It doesn’t matter. You’re not a stranger to me.”
Hugh’s tone hardened. “To you, I am an outsider.”
The smile faded from Megan’s face.
Hugh’s voice was gentle yet firm.
Megan said self-deprecatingly, “After all these years, we’ve become like strangers.”
Seeing Megan looking so vulnerable, Hugh sighed, “Megan, I know you’ve had a rough go of it. Tomorrow, I’ll find you a live-in maid and get you a car with a driver.”
At the door, Hugh stopped and added another warning. “Megan, try to steer clear of Bethan as much as you can. And don’t go out of your way to be in front of her.”
Hugh waved it off. “Divorce is off the table.”
In terms of feelings, Bethan loved and relied on him and couldn’t live without him.
Financially, he had shelled out so much money for the Olsen family over the years that she could never pay it back.
And in terms of personal ability, Bethan had become a full-time housewife right after college and was completely out of touch with the working world.
Besides, having lived a life of luxury since birth and during their marriage, she couldn’t support herself on a regular job’s salary.
So Hugh wasn’t worried about her leaving him.
But she was stubborn and prone to making a scene, and there would definitely be some drama.
Mason didn’t hold back and bluntly said, “Dude, I’ve heard that Bethan’s throwing a fit and talking about divorcing you.”
Hugh raised an eyebrow and asked, “Did Gwen tell you that?”
Mason didn’t bother denying it. “Come on, man. If Bethan really divorces you, you’ll never find another woman who loves you as much as she does in your entire life.”
Hugh said firmly, “Don’t worry. You won’t see me divorce Bethan even when you’re six feet under.”
