Chapter 435 You Idiot!
Gwen snickered and said, "Well, look who's back! Megan, you're really something. You plotted against Hugh and tricked my grandpa out of 60 million dollars, and now you're just wandering the streets like nothing happened?"
As soon as she finished speaking, the guests started whispering and quickly gathered around, all curious.
Megan stood there, her face flushed with embarrassment, feeling like a deer caught in the headlights.
She thought that whole mess was over, but now Gwen— that sneaky woman— was bringing it all up again.
With a nervous stammer, Megan tried to defend herself, "Ms. Cavill, if you've got a bone to pick with me, at least have the decency not to spread lies in front of everyone.
"If I'd done anything illegal, do you really think the cops would've cut me loose?"
Gwen tapped her chin, feigning deep thought. "Let me jog my memory. What was the name of that sugar daddy who bailed you out?"
At this, Maria, standing close by Megan, felt a jolt of unease.
She darted a furtive glance at Bradley's current wife, Sarah Field, beside her, and quickly jumped in to change the subject.
"Hey, this is a charity dinner for the Butt family. Megan, if you and Ms. Cavill have some personal beef, save it for later. Don't ruin the mood for everyone."
Megan gave an eager nod, relieved to have an out.
Gwen responded with a derisive laugh.
Then, she turned to where Mason and Charles were standing. "Charles, what's going on with the Butt family? Are you guys on the brink of going belly-up?"
Charles rushed over, a look of concern on his face. "What's the problem, Gwen?"
Gwen pointed a finger at Megan, her expression full of contempt. "How'd you even let this one in? Trying to ruin the party for everyone?"
At Gwen's words, Charles immediately moved to have Megan removed, but his parents stepped in just in time, holding him back.
Maria shot an apologetic look at Sarah. "Sorry, Mrs. Field. I had no idea bringing my niece would cause such a ruckus."
Sarah stood up for Megan. "Ms. Cavill, I know you're from the top Cavill family. But the Field family is good too. I brought Ms. Megan Ridley here—are you trying to disrespect the Field family too?"
Gwen's eyes widened in realization when she saw Sarah.
She walked right up to Sarah, still pointing at Megan. "Now I get it. No wonder Mr. Field spent 60 million dollars to get this woman out of jail and even gave up that good piece of land on the east side of the city. She's your friend, huh, Mrs. Field?"
Gasps of surprise rippled through the crowd at this revelation.
"Didn't know Mr. Field was so loyal," someone murmured.
"Yeah, dropping 60 million dollars and giving up that property for a friend. That's something," another person chimed in.
"I heard there was a big bidding war for that land," a guest added.
"Is she Mr. Field's mistress?" a voice whispered, though a more cautious one quickly shushed them.
"Hush, Mrs. Field's right here."
The air was filled with a flurry of excited chatter as guests speculated among themselves.
Just as she was about to leave, bored, several police officers walked into the venue.
One officer stepped forward. "Excuse me, is Ms. Megan Ridley here?"
Megan's face turned deathly pale when she heard her name called out. She quickly hid behind Maria.
Charles' parents stepped forward and asked, "Officers, what's going on?"
The police officer replied, "The Cavill Group reported Ms. Ridley for suspected theft of the company's confidential documents. This caused a serious data leak and big losses. Since the case involves a lot, we've set up a special team. Ms. Ridley, please come with us to the police station to help with the investigation."
Megan stood there, stunned.
She'd gone to the Cavill Group to see Hugh yesterday and had spent a few minutes in his office, but she hadn't even seen him.
"You're kidding! I'm just an ordinary gal. How could I get my hands on the Cavill Group's core data? Don't pin this on me!" Megan flat-out denied it.
The police officer said, "We don't arrest people without evidence. Our guys found your fingerprints on the mouse in Mr. Cavill's office. You'd better come with us to the police station and explain."
Megan's mind went blank. She collapsed to the floor.
Only then did she realize that Hugh had set her up again.
Crying, she grabbed Maria's arm and pleaded, "Aunt Maria, help me! I just used the mouse to delete a photo. I didn't steal the Cavill Group's confidential documents!"
Maria angrily shook off Megan's hand. "You idiot!"
