Judd walked over to her, and she paused, her voice gentle as she asked, “Are you feeling better now?”
He nodded. “About yesterday... I want to apologize on behalf of my father. He doesn’t have anything against you personally—”
“I understand. It’s because of who I am, right?” Charlotte met his eyes, her smile easy and warm. “Don’t worry about it. I didn’t take his words to heart.”
Judd frowned. “You really didn’t?”
She blinked in surprise, then chuckled. “Do you know how many things I’ve heard over the years? If I took every comment personally, I’d spend my days at war with the world.”
He pressed his lips together, silent.
“Professor and Rosemary work together, and it seems like your families get along just fine. I just didn’t expect your father to be so on edge around the Howards. What happened between your families for things to get this tense?”
“Evander didn’t tell you?”
She shook her head.
He gave a short laugh, then fell quiet for a moment before answering, “My mother and his father had... feelings for each other. Even after she married my father, it never really ended.”
Charlotte stared at him, stunned.
She couldn’t help but marvel at how tangled these relationships truly were.
Seeing her confusion, Judd continued, “My father’s never gotten over it. All these years, he’s convinced my mother’s heart still belongs to Jacques. That’s why he resents him, and anyone connected to the Howard family—he just can’t help himself.”
Suddenly, Charlotte thought of her own in-laws. They always seemed so polite and proper with each other, but there was never any warmth underneath—their civility felt empty, almost calculated.
Whenever Jacques came back to the old house, he only stayed for important matters. He’d have a meal with the matriarch and Evander, exchange a few words, and then leave again.
All this time, she’d assumed that cool distance was just a family trait.
So it was because there was never any love…
She slowly nodded, letting Judd know she understood.
