In no time, Evander’s car pulled up at the front entrance.
He swung his long legs out of the car and popped open an umbrella.
“Look who finally decided to show up. Thought you could just slip away from dinner without a word?” Jacques scolded, striding out of the restaurant after settling the bill.
“Had some things to take care of.” Evander climbed the steps, his eyes briefly flickering over Charlotte before turning to the elderly woman. “Grandma, let me drive her home.”
Rosemary nodded, giving her blessing. “Drive safe, both of you.”
Charlotte stepped under Evander’s umbrella, and he instinctively slid an arm around her shoulders as they walked away.
Watching them, Rosemary couldn’t help but feel a little relieved. For a while, she’d feared the two of them would split for good. But it was clear now—her grandson truly cared for Charlotte.
The car rolled quietly through the city.
Charlotte leaned back, trying to rest her eyes, but a heavy knot pressed in her stomach, almost rising to her chest.
After ten agonizing minutes, she finally broke the silence. “Pull over.”
Natalie glanced at her in the rearview mirror, confused. “Is something wrong, ma’am?”
“I’m going to be sick!”
Natalie quickly steered to the curb.
Charlotte pushed the door open, stumbling to the grass at the roadside, where she emptied the contents of her dinner.
Natalie grabbed a bottle of water. “I’ll go check on her.”
“I’ve got it,” Evander said, taking the water and stepping out. He came up behind Charlotte, gently rubbing her back.
“If you can’t handle the drinks, don’t force it,” he said quietly.
Something in his voice made Charlotte’s emotions surge. She shoved his hand away. “Why do you care now? Where were you before, Evander? All those other times I drank until I was sick, until I felt miserable—did you ever notice?”
Evander hesitated for a moment, silent, letting her vent.
“You never see anything, do you? You and your precious mother and daughter act like I’m invisible. Did you ever notice how much I’ve had to put up with?”
He gave a low reply. “I see it now.”
“Liar! She’s all you care about. You never see me!”
