“Have you ever considered that Hulda lied to you?” Wesley’s voice was soft, but his words hit her like a stone dropped into a placid lake.
Shane’s expression darkened. “What do you mean?”
“You’re not her child. But you’re not a Rayburn, either.”
Shane froze, then let out a laugh. “You’ll really say anything to stop me, won’t you?” She walked around him. “There was a time I wished more than anything that we weren’t related. If we weren’t, I might have…”
She trailed off. After all, her feelings were twisted, forbidden, a taboo. The world wouldn’t accept such a disgusting love. And neither would he… right?
“You don’t need to waste your breath trying to persuade me. You should leave now, while I’m still willing to talk to you civilly. Otherwise, don’t blame me for what happens next.” Shane’s back was to him, her words a final ultimatum.
Wesley didn’t move, his eyes fixed on her back. “Years ago, Hulda faked her pregnancy and went abroad, supposedly to give birth. That’s when she met your birth mother, Karen Nestor. Your mother was Chinese. She had never even been to this country, so how could she have possibly known my grandfather?”
“To prove you were my grandfather’s child, Hulda falsified the DNA results. I don’t know how you found out she wasn’t your birth mother, but in order to use you, she would never have revealed your true parentage to anyone. Except for one person: the maternity nurse who was there at your birth. She’s the only one who knows the truth. So, whether or not you’re a Rayburn… even if we can’t find her, there’s one sure way to verify it, isn’t there?”
In the utter silence of the room, his voice sounded sharp and piercing. The possibility he was raising was something she had considered but never dared to confirm. Because she was afraid. She was afraid that if she did, her so-called ‘revenge’ would become a pathetic joke.
“You don’t dare to answer.” Wesley moved to stand in front of her. “You’re afraid that these doubts are true.”
In the soft light, Wesley’s eyes shone a deep amber. After all the years they had lived under the same roof, this was the first time she felt she couldn’t read him at all.
After a long pause, she scoffed. “I don’t believe a single word you’ve said.”
