Ilse was choked into silence. No matter how egregious her and her husband's actions were, Rosemary would never truly punish her own son. The most she would do is withdraw her trust. And as for Ilse, what did her grievances matter? She might be a Howard by marriage, but in the end, she was still an outsider.
The bodyguards escorted Ilse into the car. She didn't resist; there was no room for resistance. She had believed she could strike a deal with Quincy in secret, and as long as he could keep Evander tied up in Eldermere City—dead or alive—he wouldn't be able to return to the capital. Given enough time, the Jensen matriarch would pass away, and victory would be hers.
But she had miscalculated completely. From the moment she set foot in Eldermere City, she had already fallen into Evander's trap.
…
Quincy had no idea that Evander had confronted Ilse right after their meeting. After leaving the restaurant, he drove to the Rayburn estate for the first time in ages.
Mr. Rayburn refused to see him, so he knelt at the study door, bowing his head and confessing his sins.
"Dad, I was a fool! A bastard! I never should have believed the lies from Shane and Hulda. I… I never thought I'd be responsible for Kate’s death. She was still breathing after she fell down the stairs, but I just left her to die. If I hadn't lost my mind, if I had helped her right then, Shane wouldn't have been able to kill her!"
He wept uncontrollably, slamming his forehead against the hardwood floor with sickening thuds. His forehead was already red and swollen, on the verge of breaking open.
The butler tried to help him up, but Quincy refused, continuing his hoarse cries and lamenting his transgressions.
Silence from within the study.
He knelt for a full hour until his knees were numb and his forehead was bleeding from the repeated impacts. He was nearing the point of exhaustion.
"Dad, hit me, yell at me, just please don't ignore me…" His voice was raspy and thick with congestion. "I know I was wrong. I really know I was wrong."
Finally, the door opened.
