Hiram sat in a sedan parked in the hospital's underground garage, his eyes cold and fixed on Tricia as she climbed out of a car a few spaces away. He tucked a wrench up his sleeve, then stepped out after her.

Tricia stopped in front of the elevator, answering a call.

Whatever she heard shocked her. "What did you say? Evander got involved with that mental patient's case?"

Mrs. Fontaine was on the other end, her voice tight with panic. "Yes, I have no idea why Mr. Howard would step in. I'm worried if that idiot exposes me, your sister and her husband will never let me off the hook!"

Her husband owed his cushy position at the hospital to the fact that his brother-in-law was head of the Revenue Bureau. If this blew up, she wouldn't just ruin things for her husband—she'd go down too.

Tricia chewed her thumbnail, eyes dark. "Damn it. I should've just had him throw acid, ruined that bitch's face for good—Evander would never—"

She stopped, suddenly sensing someone behind her.

She spun around.

The man raised the wrench and brought it down with brutal force.

Her phone flew from her grasp, skidding into the corner by the trash. Mrs. Fontaine's frantic voice crackled from the speaker: "Tricia? Tricia!"
