"Don't worry. From now on, I'll stay by your side. I'll take good care of you and the baby, and I won't let you suffer even a little."
Amelia rested against his solid chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart and sinking into the warmth of his arms.
All the unease she'd felt when their plans were suddenly thrown off disappeared in an instant.
"And one more thing," Jeremy said, taking the chance to bring up the wish he'd been holding onto for ages. "Come get married to me soon. I can't wait to make this official. You have to give me a proper title."
Jeremy seized the moment and put forward the wish he had been quietly nursing for far too long, that she would come home with him and simply never leave.
At the mention of marriage, Amelia's cheeks warmed. Something soft and unexpected stirred in her chest, sending ripples through her heart.
She tipped her head up from his embrace, her eyes carrying a trace of mock annoyance and something quieter beneath it. Anticipation, maybe. "Who said I'm marrying you? Didn't we agree we'd take some time and see how things go first?"
She said it, but there was no force behind the words. It sounded more like pouting than refusal.
Jeremy took one look at her flushed cheeks and evasive gaze and immediately understood. A satisfied smile curved at his lips.
He tightened his arms around her and held her a little closer, his voice firm even as he shamelessly started playing the victim.
"What's there to see? We already have a baby. Don't tell me you're trying to back out now. Amelia, you have to take responsibility for me. And for our baby."
He deliberately put on a stern face, though his eyes were full of laughter and tenderness.
Amelia burst out laughing and gave him a light punch. "Who said I was backing out? I just... I just think this is all happening a little too fast."
"Too fast?" Jeremy lowered his head and brushed the tip of his nose against her forehead. "I think it's going perfectly."
"I'd take you to city hall right now if I could and make you Mrs. Curran today." His voice was low and magnetic, impossible not to be moved by.
Looking into Jeremy's sincere eyes, Amelia finally nodded. Her voice was barely above a whisper. "Okay then. But when we register the marriage, we do it my way."
The moment she agreed, Jeremy lit up. He nodded so hard it was almost ridiculous. "Okay, okay, all your way. Whenever you say, we go. However you want to do it, that's how we'll do it."
He was so excited he scooped Amelia into his arms, already itching to kiss her and swing her around.
But the second he thought about the baby in her belly, he restrained himself.
At this rate, he probably wouldn't dare get carried away for her entire pregnancy. He'd have to behave himself from start to finish.
The two of them looked at each other and smiled, warmth and sweetness filling the air.
The panic and uncertainty that had come with the unexpected pregnancy were gone. In their place was nothing but hope and anticipation for the future.
