Nancy Grover woke up in the recovery room only to realize her heart had been removed. And the person who had carved it out of her chest was none other than the woman who wanted to tear her limb from limb—Maeve Vance.
"Don't be afraid, Nancy. The surgery was a complete success," Faye Grover said, weeping tears of joy as she saw her daughter finally open her eyes. "The doctor said that as long as you rest well, this artificial heart will last at least another twenty years."
With her three sons no longer dependable, Faye had no choice but to place all her remaining bets on Nancy. Even though her daughter's reputation was thoroughly ruined, she still possessed a stunning face. If utilized properly, Faye was certain she could recoup the lost fortune through her daughter.
Nancy had no idea what her mother was scheming; her mind was consumed by a single burning question. "Why would Maeve save me?"
It defied all logic for Maeve to stand at an operating table while heavily pregnant. Nancy could never forget the scene at Andres White's birthday banquet, where Maeve had wielded a military combat knife, fully intending to carve out Nancy's heart in front of a massive crowd. Someone who wanted her dead that desperately would never suddenly have a change of heart and risk premature labor just to stand in surgery for hours. Unless, of course, there was some hidden reason.
Looking back now, Andres's reactions had been entirely abnormal, too. On the day of the thunderstorm, she had ordered Gideon's fleet of cars to block Andres's route back to Azure Bay. Andres had been furious, yet he hadn't made a single move to actually harm her. It was as if he was wary of something. But what exactly was he so afraid of?
Faye gently stroked her daughter's pale cheek. "Don't worry about why Maeve saved you. The fact that you're alive is the best reward you could give me. Nancy, you survived a massive ordeal. You need to cherish your life now. You can't afford to ruin your body the way you used to."
Her daughter's body had been battered and torn apart; it couldn't withstand another storm, no matter how small.
Nancy turned a deaf ear to her mother's consolations, her mind spinning as she continuously analyzed Maeve's motives. "It doesn't make sense! It makes no sense at all! Why would she save me? There has to be a catch."
