Mateo smiled sheepishly.
"It's been exactly three years since we got together. The reason we didn't tell you is that everyone's just been so caught up with their own lives."
After graduation, Maeve threw herself entirely into her career, occasionally juggling graduate studies, keeping herself dizzyingly busy every single day.
Forget her old classmates; even her own son and daughter had a hard time catching a glimpse of their mother.
Maeve had to admit she'd been a bit too aggressive with her schedule since college.
"Once I get some free time, I'll organize a get-together. I'll invite all our old friends and classmates to hang out."
Mateo smiled and nodded. "Deal. Just clear your schedule, and I'll handle all the logistics and invitations."
Having been the charismatic president of the Student Union for years, Mateo was still impeccably smooth when it came to social arrangements.
After chatting with Maeve a bit longer, he excused himself to help his brother greet the arriving guests.
Once Mateo walked away, Maeve finally had a moment alone with Elena.
Gesturing slightly toward Mr. and Mrs. Fulton with her chin, Maeve lowered her voice. "Do they know about you and Mateo?"
Elena's expression was a mixture of resignation and relief.
"It's pretty much an open secret now."
Maeve raised an eyebrow. "Any objections?"
She had firsthand experience with exactly how insufferable Declan's parents could be.
Declan had been used as a pawn for arranged marriages twice. She figured Mateo wouldn't easily escape the same fate.
Elena nodded. "When they first found out, they were completely against it. But they've backed off now, mostly thanks to Declan stepping in to mediate."
Declan might not have had any control over his own marriages, but he managed to secure the best possible outcome for his little brother.
The condition was that Mateo had to join the family company and let Declan groom him into a core executive.
