Jasper said, "One of my clients is a social-media smear-campaign guy. We were drinking last night and he let something slip."
"Someone's paying multiple teams to push a scandal tied to the Morales Group."
"The target is the Morales family's daughter—the one they keep outside the public eye. I immediately thought of you."
Jasper knew a little about the bad blood between Maeve and the Moraleses. He suspected it was connected to the house transfer from not long ago.
What Jasper could guess, Maeve had already guessed.
Last night's chaos at the club had blown up. Ansel Morales had gone critical again. If the Moraleses couldn't get her kidney directly, they'd try another route—pressure, humiliation, public outrage. Anything that forced her into a corner.
When Maeve didn't answer right away, Jasper asked, "I've got a bit of rapport with that guy. Want me to warn him off? Tell him not to take the job?"
"No need," Maeve said. "Let them waste their money."
Jasper's tone sharpened. "Don't underestimate the internet. A mob can destroy a person."
Maeve's voice stayed calm. "Maybe your guy turns it down out of loyalty. There are plenty more who'll happily take Morales money."
"Let it play out. I want to see what kind of show they think they're putting on."
After she hung up, Maeve spotted a familiar figure walking toward her.
Elena, from the law department.
Her eyes were swollen red—she'd clearly been crying.
When Elena saw Maeve standing there, still and unmovable, she hesitated, then forced a smile.
"Maeve. Mateo said you signed up for that tech competition Grover Group is sponsoring."
Maeve nodded. "Credits. That's the whole reason."
Elena was a Northern girl, and they'd crossed paths a few times. She'd always seemed to like Maeve.
"If you need anything, just say the word. I've got a little pull in student council. When it's time to bend the rules, don't be shy with me."
