In Aethelburg, his position drew attention like blood in the water. If word got out that he was married, every faction would start sniffing around his private life.
Until he was ready, he didn't want that mess.
"I can leave the Morales family alone for now," Andres said. "But Ansel has to die."
A man who'd tried more than once to take Maeve's kidney didn't deserve oxygen.
Maeve yawned softly, a hint of reproach in her tone. "How many times have I told you? Stay out of other people's business. Why can't you just remember that?"
She trusted Andres could kill Ansel cleanly.
But whatever came after, whether the consequences or the backlash of fate, he'd have to carry it.
Andres, instead of being offended, felt warmth spread through him. "You're worried about me."
Maeve rubbed at her tired eyes. "Our fates are tied together now."
He saw how exhausted she looked and let her rest against his shoulder. "Why are you this tired?"
Maeve settled in like she belonged there. "Probably because I went to sleep too late last night."
Andres brushed her bangs back gently. "Hang on. We're almost home."
By the time they reached Azure Bay, Maeve had fallen asleep on him.
Andres carried her to the bedroom as carefully as if she might break. The tenderness on his face was a knife in Remi's chest.
Over the next few days, the Morales family didn't come after Maeve again. Luka went strangely quiet, too.
Maeve didn't believe for a second they'd given up.
Ansel was Luka's whole world. If there was even a sliver of hope, Luka would chase it like a madman.
And Jasper Jett's warning still rang in her ears—the Morales family was quietly rallying online trolls, and sooner or later they'd try to blow things up publicly.
